TikTok, also known as Douyin in China, is a social media app for creating and sharing videos and live broadcasts. The app was released in September 2016 by ByteDance and has become a leading platform for short videos. It has also gained popularity worldwide and is now one of the fastest-growing apps with large user groups in several countries. Perhaps you or your children use the app? Regardless, here are ten facts that you probably didn’t know before!

TikTok has grown rapidly…

Although TikTok has been around since 2016, it wasn’t until 2018 that the app was released globally, following the merger with Musical.ly. At the global launch, there were about 1,000,000 video views per day. Now, just over four years later, it is one of the fastest-growing social media platforms. [source]

But TikTok is far from the largest…

Despite its impressive growth, TikTok is still far from being the largest social network. As of 2022, the app ranks seventh among the most popular social networks. Facebook takes the first place, followed by YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, and the Chinese platforms Weixin/WeChat. To put it into perspective, Facebook has around 2.85 billion active users per month, while TikTok has “only” 732 million active users. [source]

Android users spend an average of 13 hours on the app each month…

According to App Annie, Android users spend over 13 hours on TikTok each month on average. Despite being the seventh-largest social media app, this makes TikTok the fourth-largest in terms of time spent on the platform. [source]

The most gender-balanced app…

51% of TikTok users are men, while 49% are women, making it the most gender-balanced of all social media platforms. As a comparison, Reddit has 59.7% registered male users, and 56% of Facebook’s registered users are male. [source]

A strong user intent…

Unlike YouTube, where the majority of users only choose to watch videos, TikTok has a highly engaged fan base. Over half of the users have uploaded their own content at least once. [source]

Time spent on TikTok has increased by 210% year over year…

The number of TikTok users is not only increasing but the time users spend on the app is also increasing. According to App Annie, the time spent on the app has increased by approximately 210% each year, and this usage growth is expected to continue into 2022 and beyond. [source]

As of July 2020, Addison Rae was the highest-earning TikTok creator…

Addison Rae is an American teenager who experienced rapid fame on TikTok. After creating her account to make dance videos, she quickly gained a large number of followers. Although she doesn’t have as many followers as other creators on the platform, Addison is reported to be the highest-earning and is said to have earned around 5 million dollars in 2020 alone. But Charli D’Amelio has the most followers…

Charli D’Amelio rose to TikTok fame quickly and started her account in 2019. The Connecticut-born teenager became popular on the platform for her dance videos. Most people, including D’Amelio herself, find it hard to understand what led to her enormous popularity. However, she is the most followed TikToker with over 136 million followers. [source]

Over 100,000 influencers…

TikTok is becoming a hub for influencers and is competing heavily with Instagram in this regard. According to Statista, there were about 106,000 influencers using TikTok as of 2020, and this number is likely much higher by now. This makes it an attractive platform, particularly for brands and social media marketers. [source]

Creators with 15,000 followers or fewer have higher engagement…

When it comes to TikTok, more followers doesn’t necessarily mean better engagement. In fact, Statista found that creators with fewer followers generate much higher engagement. If engagement and community building are what you hope to achieve with your campaigns, it may be best to collaborate with influencers who have 15,000 followers or fewer, according to this statistic.
