Illuminati – which means “the enlightened” in Latin – is a collective term for associations from the 16th to 18th centuries that boasted a higher insight into the divine. Perhaps the most well-known is the Illuminati Order itself, founded on May 1, 1776, by Adam Weishaupt, a law professor from the city of Ingolstadt in Germany. However, the order was later banned by the Bavarian state only nine years later, in 1785. Today, there are numerous theories suggesting that the Illuminati Order is still an existing organization secretly controlling the world. What do you think? Regardless, here are ten facts about the order itself that may be good to know!

This is roughly how today’s conspiracy theory about the Illuminati Order looks, in brief…

Today, Illuminati is best known as a conspiracytheory often associated with celebrities. The main conspiracy theories suggest that the order still exists in secret and “controls the world,” aiming for a world government with totalitarian power. In reality, it might have been a racist elite club…

One could simply say that the Illuminati Order was originally a racist elite club since it had no dark-skinned people as members. Nesta Webster – known for her wild conspiracy theories in the early 20th century – claimed in several of her published books that the new world order was believed to have been created for anti-Jewish propaganda. She also wrote that both the Illuminati and the Freemasons were societies driven by groups for the new world order. [source]

Illuminati in Sweden…

The Illuminati has not always been the same. What we know today has changed dramatically. The original Illuminati name origin is Italian in origin. However, the original name and movement of what would be the Illuminati is much different. The ever fascinating and curious group was originally called the “Perfectibilists“. Adam Weishaupt, the Bavarian founder of the group had other ideas for this group initially. In time, the founder of the group thought the name was not serious, so he went through several name changes. Before settling on the Illuminati he settled on The Bee Order. However, he finally finalized on the name “The Order of the Illuminati“. [source]

Assumed to be glimpsed on the dollar bill…

The Illuminati symbol is believed to appear on the U.S. dollar bill. However, it was actually designed by President Thomas Jefferson, who was a Freemason and not a member of the Illuminati Order. The eye, as seen in the image below, also symbolizes the Freemasons today but was not adopted until years after the production of the dollar bill. [source]

The theory about Denver International Airport…

Since the completion of the construction of Denver International Airport (DIA) in 1995, the first airport built in the USA since the 1970s, there have been countless conspiracy theories surrounding it. Many of these theories are loosely supported by various aspects of the airport, from the artwork present to the large number of unused buildings and hangars. One of these theories suggests that Denver International Airport is the headquarters of the Illuminati Order. What do you think? [source]

They had both peculiar rituals and ideals…

No matter how many odd conspiracy theories there may be about the Illuminati, we do know that there were two sides to the order: their peculiar rituals and their ideals. They used symbols (including the owl), adopted pseudonyms to avoid identification, and had complex hierarchies such as “Novice“, “Minerval” and “Illuminated Minerval“. While following these bizarre rituals, they also promoted a worldview reflecting the ideals of the Enlightenment, such as rational thinking and self-governance. Anti-clerical and anti-royalist, the Illuminati were closer to revolutionaries than world rulers, as they attempted to infiltrate and disrupt powerful institutions, primarily the monarchy. [source]

Conspiracy theorists link a multitude of famous figures to the order…

Several influential individuals are believed to have been part of the new world order, according to conspiracy theorists, including Adolf Hitler, Karl Marx, Josef Stalin, Vladimir Lenin, Barack Obama and Benito Mussolini. Several high-profile celebrities are also considered to be part of the elite group, including Jay-Z, Lady Gaga, Kanye West, and Beyonce. [source]

Claimed to control all levels of societies worldwide…

Some claim that Illuminati members have infiltrated all levels of societies worldwide, including the US government, the Vatican City, NATO, the UN, Hollywood, global media, and more. By allegedly controlling all these different governments and forms of media, it is easier to keep the organization secret, according to the claims. [source]

Perhaps the most mythical conspiracy theory…

One of the most widespread conspiracy theories is actually based on two dates. Illuminati was founded on May 1, 1776, and just two months later – on July 4, 1776 – the American Declaration of Independence was written. Several conspiracy theorists refuse to see this as a mere coincidence! [source]

Accused of significant historical events…

The Illuminati is often accused of major historical events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Napoleon’s defeat at the Battle of Waterloo, and the French Revolution. In other words, the secret order has been incredibly busy over the years! [source]
